Post-Quantum Cryptography, AI, and Blockchain — How to Read the Future Factory Tech Stack

From post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to agentic AI and blockchain-backed traceability — we break down the technologies of the future-factory discourse without the hype, separating what to prepare now from what to keep watching.

"A factory protected by post-quantum cryptography, autonomously operated by AI, with blockchain guaranteeing its history" — sentences like this always appear in the future-factory discourse. Half of it is direction, half of it is rhetoric. What matters is the eye to distinguish when, where, and why each technology is valid.

Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) — the Most Realistic Agenda

Paradoxically, the most urgent of the three is the one that sounds the most futuristic: PQC. There are two reasons.

  • "Harvest now, decrypt later" — The attack of storing today's encrypted communications and breaking them once quantum computers mature is a threat that has already begun. The longer industrial data lives, the longer its exposure window.
  • Equipment lifespan — Factory equipment lives 15–20 years. Gateways installed today are likely to still be in service in the quantum era.

The heart of the preparation is not adopting a particular algorithm but crypto-agility. The evaluation criterion is whether the TLS stack and certificate scheme are structured so they can be swapped out through updates.

Agentic AI — "Approved Autonomy" over Autonomy

The picture of AI autonomously operating a factory is right in direction and early in timing. The realistic intermediate stage is clear — query freely, act only through approval gating. AI detects anomalies, diagnoses causes, and proposes actions, but anything that touches the equipment executes only after human approval. Read-only tool exposure (MCP) and approval workflows are the safe staircase toward the autonomous factory.

Blockchain — a Broad Promise, a Narrow Zone of Validity

Industrial applications of blockchain have been an area of much overpromise. Narrow the lens, however, and a valid spot remains — immutable history where tampering and forgery become a dispute cost. Supply chain quality evidence, regulatory reporting, and multi-party audits are the examples. Inside the factory, you can achieve most of the same goals without going all the way to a distributed ledger, using end-to-end audit trails and signed records. Start from the requirement (immutability, evidence), not from the technology.
